The downtrodden in Yeddaw have no champion, and Lift knows she must seize this awesome responsibility. Although the young Azish emperor granted her safe haven from an executioner she knows only as Darkness, court life is suffocating the free-spirited Lift, who can't help heading to Yeddaw when she hears the relentless Darkness is there hunting people like her with budding powers. Now, in Edgedancer, the barely teenage nascent Knight Radiant finds that time stands still for no one. Three years ago, Lift asked a goddess to stop her from growing older-a wish she believed was granted.

In the end, it was okay, just not for me.From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, a special gift edition of Edgedancer, a short novel of the Stormlight Archive (previously published in Arcanum Unbounded). I found myself wishing that it didn't rely so much on the childish humor, but Lift is a kid so I guess it fits. Obviously, the story itself isn't necessary to the overarching plot of the series, but it does what it sets out to do: it is a fun interlude and fills in some gaps from the main series. When not doing any character voice, I thought she did fine work, but those voices were just irritating. I have found that I am unfortunately just not one of them. Most people seem to love Reading's work, and that's great. I enjoy Lift as a character, but I just can't get behind Kate Reading and her character voices, which I found to usually be annoying and juvenile, and almost ruined Lift for me.

Now I know that this is a series that I will have to stick to reading in print. I wanted something to kill some time with on my work commute, and thought that it would be a good pick. I picked this up because I've gotten hooked on SA, but I had never gotten a chance to read this before Oathbringer came out last year. I'd highly recommend this read to fans of the Stormlight Archive, not just to complete the series, but because it's a really enjoyable read. Professional, polished, and put me right there in the story. And Wyndle might be my new favorite spren, after Syl of course! Kate Reading is. Lift's magic is fascinating, I can't wait to see what she does with it in the future. He's able to create a new and original culture each time he introduces a city, with such vivid imagery I feel like I'm there myself. Sanderson shines again with the setting, a city carved by Shardbearers right out of the stone ground. This novella is important to read before Oathbringer. Then her innate generosity and protective nature would shine through and I couldn't help cheering for her again. I personally loved the spunky girl, but at times still felt frustrated with her forced immaturity. She's a character you'll either find really annoying or really endearing. But if you're reading Edgedancer, you've probably already been introduced to Lift. The audiobook doesn't contain Lift's original chapter from Words of Radiance, although the Kindle edition does. When Lift learns he's on the trail of another fledgling Radiant, she has to discover their identity before Darkness does. Her flight takes her to Yeddaw where she finds Darkness, the Shardbearer who almost took her life. After Lift's miraculous display, she's smothered by attention from the viziers and scribes until she decides to run away. This novella follows Lift, the quirky preteen orphan who attempted to rob the Emperor's Palace in Words of Radiance.
